Law enforcement officials discovered the body of Jhon Venegas Romero, the prime suspect in a Houston-area murder case, in the town of Needville. Romero, 24, was found after deputies from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a person seen hanging.
Romero was suspected in the stabbing death of his wife, 23-year-old Anyi Tatiana Montealegre Izquierdo, in their Richmond home on Oct. 14. He was found about two miles from where he was last seen alive, identified by his clothing, tattoos, and a passport found on his body.
Sheriff Eric Fagan stated, 'While a thorough investigation is underway, this appears to be a suicide. Our deepest condolences go out to all families affected by this tragedy.'
Izquierdo’s family expressed concerns about Romero's potential to harm others, citing his upbringing in a Colombian jungle and history of violence. They revealed that Romero had previously attempted to kill Izquierdo in Colombia before they moved to the U.S. to support their family back home.
Colombian Consulate General Andres Diaz expressed regret over Romero's death, emphasizing the importance of facing the law. The family wishes to repatriate Izquierdo’s body to Colombia, a process that could take 4–6 weeks as the investigation continues.
The consulate is assisting with funeral arrangements, acknowledging the tragic end to Izquierdo's pursuit of the American dream. Diaz stated, 'We are very apologetic for how this situation unfolded.'
