Primary school forced to close as police deal with 'serious incident' at park

A primary school in Bury has been forced to close today as police deal with a 'serious incident' at a park nearby.

Parents and children have been turned away from St Thomas’s C.E. Primary School on Pimhole Road on the first day of term due to the incident in Openshaw Park. Police have closed off all entrances to the park, and emergency services are stationed on the road near to the primary school.

Forensic officers have been pictured at the scene and a white screen has been put in place in an area behind the cordon. The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police.

Councillor for Redvales Tamoor Tariq said in a tweet this morning that police and council officials were 'working closely' to deal with the incident. He said the school had been advised to close while officers worked at the scene.

His tweet said: "The emergency services & Bury Council are working closely to deal with a serious incident near St.Thomas’s Primary School & Openshaw Park. The school has been advised to close, it’s important we let @gmpolice lead the response, those worrying an explanation will be out soon."

The Manchester Evening News understands that police have been at the scene since the early hours of this morning. A fire engine was also pictured near the park earlier today.

Pimhole Road remains partially blocked. A small scene remains in place.
