Primark starts debate among shoppers on how to properly pronounce its name

If there's one high-street shop that has earned itself a reputation for being quite the national treasure for shoppers, it has to be Primark.

Since its first store opened in Dublin in 1969, the budget fashion chain has been delighting shoppers with its range of low cost clothing, accessories, homeware and beauty products.

Let's face it, at this point, the fact that Primark is beloved by everyone across the country has become something that we can all universally agree on.

However, like many good things in life, the entire nation can't always agree on everything and we are always left pondering the same thing when it comes to the iconic retailer.

Do you pronounce it Pry-mark or Pree-mark?

It's the age old question that has been starting debates and arguments amongst the fashion giant's loyal fanbase for years and it looks to still be a cause for contention.

That's right, shoppers are once again divided over how to correctly pronounce the store's name after the fashion store started a debate on its Facebook page.

Primark asked its devoted followers: "Let's settle the debate, is it pronounced: 'Pree-mark' or 'Pry-mark'."

And the debate was not settled quickly, as 6,000 shoppers argued their case for what they believe is the correct pronunciation of the store.

One person wrote: "Its an Irish company and the Irish pronounce it Pree-mark, really that should be discussion closed."

Unfortunately, the discussion was certainly not closed, as a second commented: "There no debate it’s pry-mark."

Shoppers from different locations gave their reasons (Reuters)

And, judging from the comments, it looks like location is a key factor for the reason why so many people pronounce the name differently.

"In Wales it's Preemark", commented one shopper from Cardiff.

"Pree-mark! I'm from Scotland and have always called it that. However a few years ago I was in York and heard people around me call it pry-mark", suggested another shopper from Scotland.

While a shopper from England wrote: "In Europe it is pronounced as preemark,in English prymark."

Other shoppers suggested that the correct way to say it is Pree-mark, based on the fact it is an Irish company and that is how they pronounce it, as one shopper wrote: "I am from Northern Ireland & it's Pree Mark. We used to have an ad on tv that sang "Pree mark has a whole lot of things for Christmas" etc. In the South of Ireland it is known as Penneys."

Another shopper fuelled the fire by saying: "I’ve never heard anyone call it Pree-Mark. Pry-Mark all the way."

Despite the name being an area that is still widely debated by shoppers, one thing they could mostly agree on was that they jokingly refer to it as "Pri-marni."

Other savvy shoppers were also quick to comment that the fashion retailer had actually settled the debate once and for all, by officially confirming the correct saying. One shopper simply said: "Pry-mark, you settled it with a t-shirt already".

So, after all that, it turns out that apparently we should all be saying Pry-mark after all. Let's be honest though, it may be on a t-shirt and their website, but we all know it's still Pree-mark.
