Primark shoppers divided as more self-service checkouts added to stores

Primark has introduced self-checkouts to cut down the time customers will have to queue for. But not everybody is impressed with the retailer, with some critics claiming it will encourage thefts from the store, despite the fact the stores have visible security.

Samirah, aka @samirahhxoxo posted a video saying her Primark was 'bougee', meaning fancy, for having the self-checkout option. In the short clip, people can be seen scanning their own items and putting them into Primark's trademark bags, much like you would at a supermarket self-checkout.

Then, as reported by the Mirror, they leave through security doors, monitored by a Primark employee. In another clip she posted, a sign can be seen which read: "Please use your receipt to EXIT."

She was then seen scanning the barcode on her receipt, then the security doors opened to let her out. Not everyone was convinced by the new system, however, with some stating people may take advantage of it.

One wrote: "So after years of trying to put an end to paper receipts, they then make them your only option to leave?" Others acknowledged that it would speed up the check-out process.

"Would make life easier", another said. "I'm glad they're doing this!", one added. A Primark spokesperson said: "Earlier this year we launched a trial of self-service checkouts in our Sheffield and Northampton stores.

"The response so far has been really positive, especially from customers who are short on time or making smaller purchases. We’re rolling the trial out to our West Bromwich, Kingston and Coventry stores in the coming weeks to help us understand further the benefits that self-service checkouts bring."
