Primark criticised over 'sneaky' price increase on tags

Primark has sparked outrage after one savvy shopper claimed the fast fashion store was making 'sneaky' price changes. The bargain hunter said that the last time they were in Primark they noticed a change on some price tags claiming the retailer was peeling off the original prices, and then sticking a new price label on the underside of the tag.

Primark confirmed that their prices are increasing, and they said that they've made no secret of it. They had already warned customers that prices were set to increase in 'autumn and winter', and the Mirror reported that this could be the inflation people are seeing now when they're shopping in their local store.

However, the publication said that TikTok user Danny Cardwell was furious and took to the social media platform in a video captioned: "You’ve got some explaining to do. Cost of living *******", followed by an angry face.

The shopper had noticed the different prices on an item of clothing and said: "Primark doing us dirty by removing tags and putting prices up. Sneaky *****."

In the video, a pair of shorts were shown with a tag on stating they were £12. They appeared to have been previously purchased as they were in a bag.

The video continued, comparing them to the same pair of shorts on the shop floor where the bottom part of the tag has been taken off, and on the back of the tag itself there is a new price of £14. After viewing the view, fellow social media users were shocked but many admitted that they'd experienced the same thing. One person said: "Try being on 6am delivery having to rip all the prices off everything." With another adding: "I work at Primark and we have a whole team of people who remove the old tags and put stickers with new prices on the products."

Others were sympathetic to the price hike. One person added: "Every Primark has done it because everything is going up lol." And another pointed out: "Why sneaky? Prices are increasing everywhere and maybe it’s easier than tag everything again, however, I think it's just £1 more - still cheap." Comments continued: "A combination of Brexit, Covid, and the cost of living crisis," said another.

In response to the observation, a Primark spokesperson told The Mirror: "Great value pricing is at the heart of the Primark brand and we know that’s never been more important to our customers. Given the extraordinary increase in our costs, we announced back in April that we had no option but to increase prices across a selection of this season’s autumn/winter ranges.

"We’ve worked hard to make this process as seamless as possible, however, we know there's been some instances where labels have not been updated to reflect the new prices. We’re really sorry about this – we will always honour the price on the label [where made aware] and encourage customers who think they may have been overcharged to speak to a manager in-store who can help them."
