Primark has been branded 'sneaky' by fuming customers for secretly upping their prices without updating their price-tags properly - with some not noticing until they got to the till.
The fast-fashion retailer recently came under fire on social media after shoppers noticed that several price-tags had been cut off, or covered up with a new price.
Shoppers took to TikTok recently to blast the high-street chain after they began peeling off price stickers on certain items to find the original price underneath. In some cases, the new price was up to 60% higher than it was originally priced.
One shopper highlighted how a pair of joggers had increased from £12 to £14, while another noticed a similar pair had risen from £5 to £6. Other shoppers shared videos with their price-labels either blacked out, or completely replaced with a new one so the original was no longer available.
"@Primark You’ve got some explaining to do. Cost of living b******", fumed one shopper.
"#Primark ripping customers off... the take of original prices have been ripped off and they've "put their prices up" I only got a bit of stuff and nearly cost 40 quid!", said a second angry customer.
A third user shared a video of the price-tags been ripped off and wrote: "@Primark something not right here!! #primark #pricechange #pricehike #inflation #costofliving #sly."
However, some shoppers came to the fashion retailer's defence, with some saying that Primark has had to up their prices following the rise in inflation and cost of living crisis.
"It's just retail. Everything is going up. It's not sneaky, just business..", commented one customer.
"Why sneaky ? Prices are increasing everywhere and maybe it’s easier than tag everything again, however I think. Is just £1 more, still cheap", commented another.
Another warned shoppers about the price increases on Facebook: "Warning to all who shop at Primark. They are increasing their prices on a lot of their existing stock. Some have had their price tags blacked out where as others go through the till at a higher price from that on the tags."
It comes just after Primark warned shoppers earlier this year that they would begin to see an increase in prices when they visited the store during the Autumn. The fashion chain's owner, Associated British Foods (ABF), said that they were raising prices on select items due to the soaring levels of inflation.
Speaking of the price increase and labels, a spokesperson for Primark told the Daily Record: “Great value pricing is at the heart of the Primark brand and we know that’s never been more important to our customers. Given the extraordinary increase in our costs, we announced back in April that we had no option but to increase prices across a selection of this season’s autumn/winter ranges.
"We’ve worked hard to make this process as seamless as possible, however we know there’s been some instances where labels have not been updated to reflect the new prices. We’re really sorry about this – we will always honour the price on the label [where made aware] and encourage customers who think they may have been overcharged to speak to a manager in-store who can help them."
