Pride of Britain winners camp with boy who spent 2 years sleeping in a tent for charity

It was a night to remember for some Pride of Britain winners, when they joined host Carol Vorderman for a special camping trip.

More than 100 people came together to enjoy great food, a campfire sing-song and a night under the stars at Max Woosey’s Big Camp Out.

The 12-year-old has spent the past two years sleeping in a tent to raise more than £700,000 for the North Devon Hospice.

His mum Rachael, 49, said the event had been a huge success.

“I slept out too, and we’ve all come away with a new respect for what Max is doing,” she said.

“We were all cold and tired but he has been doing this every night for all this time.

"You realise how tough it can be and what a remarkable achievement it is.”

In 2021, Max won a Spirit of Adventure Award at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards (PAULA DAVIES/APEX)

Max was initially inspired by a family friend who had been helped by the hospice. He has been through 15 tents so far.

On Saturday the second annual Big Camp Out took place, with people across the world virtually joining Max and the good cause to raise even more vital funds.

In 2021, Max won a Spirit of Adventure Award at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, in partnership with TSB, for his amazing work – and on Saturday he was reunited with some of his fellow winners.

Best pals Hughie Higginson, 10, and Freddie Xavi, 11 – who won a Young Fundraiser accolade after raising more than £200,000 for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity – joined Max.

As did Harmonie-Rose Allen, the brave seven-year-old who won a Child of Courage Award after losing her limbs to meningitis.

Fellow Pride of Britain winner, heroic firefighter Steve Wharton –who dived in the River Eden, to rescue a drowning boy – was there too.

The winners were met by almost 100 other campers and Pride of Britain host Carol.

They were kept entertained with live music and circus performers, and enjoyed tasty treats from a food truck during the event near Max’s home in North Devon.

Some of the best moments were captured for a new podcast, being launched by the Pride of Britain team.

Hosted by Carol, Pride of Britain – Extraordinary People will feature inspirational conversation from the winners, presenters and experts as well as their emotional stories.

Rachael said: “The winners all had an amazing time, they just get on so well.

"Going through that experience of winning together has given them a real bond and it seems like they can just pick up where they left off.

"There was something very special about seeing them all together, just having fun, there was no awkwardness at all.

“There were people posting on Twitter about their camp-outs from all over the world.

“It was amazing to see the impact he’s had – and even better, we know we’ve raised even more money.”
