'Priceless' moment baby grabs Kate's handbag during royal Aberfan visit

A one-year-old was caught playfully snatching a handbag belonging to the Princess of Wales today during her visit to Aberfan.

Baby Daniel reached out for Kate's black handbag while she stopped to talk to mother-of-two Lucy Williams. Kate left the tot to play with the bag for several minutes while she spoke to other visitors before coming back to retrieve it.

The 'priceless' moment occurred in the last leg of the Prince and Princess' trip to Aberfan Memorial Garden on Friday. The site stands in memory of the 1966 disaster which resulted in the death of 144 people, including 116 schoolchildren.

William and Kate were greeted by a cheering crowd as well as dozens of children waving Welsh flags before being led by survivor David Davies through the former site of Pantglas Primary School. The school was completely engulfed by the devastating landslide which came from colliery spoil tip.

Speaking after the visit, Mrs Williams, 30, whose mother-in-law was a survivor of the tragedy, described the 'memorable encounter'. "He just stole her handbag," she said.

"He took a shine to it and she let him play with it." Her mother-in-law, Carole Williams, described the moment as “priceless – something to remember”.
