Price changes at BT mean bills will increase by nearly 10% but new deals can help you save

BT customers will see their bills rise by nearly 10% shortly due to the growing figure of inflation in the UK.

The 9.3% price hike, which will come into effect on March 31, will not affect all broadband and TV customers though.

Some consumers may have agreed to an annual price rise when entering their contract as it's often part of BT's terms and conditions - which means you'll unlikely be able to cancel without having to pay an expensive exit fee.

Others may be able to switch without being affected.

Those who are on the BT Home Essentials, BT Home Phone Saver and BT Basic will have prices frozen because they represent the brand's more 'financially vulnerable customers', according to BT.

BT says it will begin to write to customers to update them on their price rises in the coming weeks.

BT’s terms and conditions state that its prices will increase annually at the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation, plus 3.9%.

Since the current CPI rate is a staggering 5.4%, the total increase amounts to 9.3%

Speaking about the upcoming price rise, BT Managing Director of Consumer Customer Services Nick Lane told broadband-focused blog ISPreview: “Price rises are never popular, but are sometimes a necessary part of business, if we’re to keep up with the rising costs we face and ensure we can continue to deliver a brilliant network experience as customers usage of data grows month on month.

"We’ve thought long and hard about how we make sure that any pricing changes are predictable, clear, and not unfairly focussed on our existing customers, but reflected in our new prices too.

"These changes won’t be for all our customers, however.

"For our financially vulnerable customers on BT Home Essentials, BT Home Phone Saver and BT Basic, we will be leaving their prices as they are."

BT are not the only one's to increase their prices for their broadband and phone packages. Virgin Media announced a price rise of an average of £56 per year for customers this year.

Sky has revealed the cheapest Sky Q deal ever to give customers a way to lower bills in January.

The Sky Q box is available for £31 for the first time, the cheapest it has ever been, but it does come with some catches.

The deal gets access to 200 plus free-to-air channels and Superfast Broadband of 59mbp/s under the deal but it does not include setup costs and does not include every Sky channel. C

The package includes over 200 free-to-air channels, apps, plus the facility to record, Superfast Broadband with average speeds of 59Mb/s, and Sky Pay As You Talk, where customers only pay for the calls they make.
