Prestwick Airport agrees new pay deal with staff

Glasgow Prestwick Airport has announced a new round of pay increases.

This year, all staff will receive a minimum of 6% pay increase and the Real Living Wage of £10.90 per hour as a minimum.

As well as increased pension contributions, staff will also receive and additional one-off payment of between £1,000 and £1,250 to help with the cost of living.

Next year will see a further 4% increase in pay, as well as increased employer pension contributions.

The latest published financial results to March 2022 showed the airport post operating profits of just under £2m; the fifth consecutive year of improving results.

Cargo volumes rose by 36% to 18,000 tonnes, while passenger numbers more than doubled to 118,000. Refuelling was up 89% to 36 million litres, with the value of fuel sold - at £20.8m - making up the bulk of the airport's revenue.

The Ayrshire-based site has been in public ownership since 2013, when the government paid £1 to keep it from administration. It still owes the taxpayer around £43m, but it has not drawn down new loan funds for three years.

The new pay deal was backed overwhelmingly by staff, with 88% and 94% of members from the Unite and Prospect trade unions accepting the deal.

Ian Forgie, chief executive of Glasgow Prestwick Airport, said: “Over the last five years we have been steadily growing as a business supported by our dedicated staff, and I am pleased that we have been able to agree this two-year pay deal.

“We will continue to unlock the airport’s potential by investing in facilities and our staff, as we progress a number of opportunities to deliver steady growth.“

Last August, Unite members at Prestwick voted in favour of a pay offer and cancelled planned strikes.

Unite represents workers including airport security, firefighters, airfield operators, ground crew, ground handling, cargo, customer services and cleaners at the airport.
