President of Amgueddfa Cymru, National Museum Wales Roger Lewis standing down

President of Amgueddfa Cymru, National Museum Wales, Roger Lewis, will step down from his role at the end of this month. The former chief executive of the WRU is leaving the role three months early having committed to undertake a number of other public roles and projects, including his recently extended chairmanship of Racecourse Media Group.

Mr Lewis has chaired the National Museum Wales board of trustees since 2019, on a four-year term. Mr Lewis, who in his career has held senior executive roles with the likes of EMI, ITV and Classic FM, has agreed to become a life patron.

Funded by the Welsh Government Amgueddfa Cymru, National Museum Wales, operates seven museums across Wales.

Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, Dawn Bowden said: “I want to place on record my thanks to Roger for his service to Amgueddfa Cymru, recognising the considerable progress the organisation has made during his tenure, in particular the launch of its new brand and 2030 strategy. Amgueddfa Cymru is well placed for the future and I and my department look forward to continuing working closely with Roger in the near future.”

Dr Carol Bell, vice-president of Amgueddfa Cymru, said: “On behalf of the board of trustees, I should like to thank Roger for his contribution during a period of unprecedented challenge as a much-valued leader of the Board. Roger has worked tirelessly, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, to secure excellent relationships with Amgueddfa Cymru’s stakeholders in support of its 10-year strategy. Our National Museum is, consequently, well placed to tell the stories of people right across Wales and to deliver important projects within the Welsh Government programme for government. We are looking forward to building on his achievements as president and are grateful for his ongoing support in his capacity as a life patron of Amgueddfa Cymru.”

Mr Lewis said: “I pay fulsome tribute and give thanks to my friends on the Amgueddfa Cymru board and the wonderful Amgueddfa Cymru team of people who work so hard across all our national museum sites in Wales. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with such a talented group of people

".I sincerely thank the Welsh Government for their enlightened support, help and guidance, in these most challenging of times, ensuring the history, heritage, and culture of our nation is secured for generations now and in the future. The Amgueddfa Cymru 2030 strategy is a great road map for the years ahead, and I look forward to continuing supporting our glorious national museum as a life patron.”
