President Michael D. Higgins is set to reduce his public engagements for the rest of the summer due to a surgery next Tuesday.
A statement from his office announced the President will undergo the procedure to relieve his back pain.
He will carry out "reduced number of public engagements" in the remaining weeks of the summer as he completes a rehabilitation programme.
It was revealed the procedure "has been planned for some time" with the busy autumn schedule and a number of planned engagements overseas taken into consideration.
The statement added: "It is anticipated that the President will carry out a reduced number of public engagements over the remaining weeks of the summer while he completes a short rehabilitation programme, during which time he will be preparing speeches for the autumn engagements and continuing to fulfil his constitutional duties."
These duties will include consideration of legislation from Aras an Uachtarain and from his home in Galway.
