President Joe Biden is set to sign a proclamation expanding two national monuments in California, protecting nearly 120,000 acres of land. The White House announced that the proclamation will add 105,919 acres to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and 13,696 acres to the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who will be present at the signing, highlighted that these expansions will enhance access to nature, boost the outdoor economy, and recognize areas of significance to Tribal Nations and Indigenous peoples. The move aims to safeguard public lands for current and future generations.
The Biden administration's focus on conservation efforts is evident in its commitment to preserving millions of acres of land and water. The San Gabriel Mountains, located east of Los Angeles, offer a mountainous wilderness area, while the Berryessa Snow Mountain region, situated north of Napa, features canyons, rolling hills, and native wildflowers.
Senator Alex Padilla of California emphasized the importance of national monuments in fostering a deep connection to nature for millions of Californians. Representative Judy Chu, a staunch supporter of monument expansion, noted that enlarging the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument would safeguard the primary source of drinking water for a significant portion of Los Angeles County and provide access to nature for underserved communities.
President Biden's conservation efforts have already resulted in the protection of over 24 million acres of public lands. Recent actions include the designation of the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni National Monument near the Grand Canyon, as well as the establishment of new monuments in Nevada and Colorado. Additionally, protections for national monuments in Utah, which were previously restricted by former President Donald Trump, have been restored.
