President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu discuss Palestinian state

President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu speak about supporting a Palestinian state.

President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the phone yesterday for the first time in nearly a month, highlighting their differing perspectives on the establishment of a Palestinian state after the recent conflict. While the White House has reaffirmed its support for the creation of a Palestinian state, Israeli politicians hold varying opinions on the matter.

During their conversation, President Biden emphasized the need for a secure Israel, stating that any alternative arrangement could pose further threats from Gaza. This divergent viewpoint underscores the challenges faced in finding common ground on this complex issue.

In an effort to promote diplomatic solutions, Israeli, Palestinian, and Middle Eastern foreign ministers are scheduled to meet with members of the European Union in Brussels on Monday. This meeting aims to foster dialogue and explore potential avenues for de-escalation and peace-building.

The United Nations has drawn attention to the devastating impact of the conflict on women and children, with reports indicating that two mothers are losing their lives every hour. In the southern part of the Gaza Strip, only nine functioning hospitals remain, severely lacking in essential medical equipment. Recent attacks have forced medical professionals to make difficult decisions under extreme circumstances, such as performing amputations without anesthesia.

Sadly, these desperate measures are a consequence of the siege endured for 15 days, with tanks stationed at the entrance of many homes. Under such dire circumstances, medical professionals are left with no choice but to take extreme measures to save lives.

Beyond the immediate conflict in Gaza, tensions in the surrounding region continue to escalate. An explosion occurred in Syria's capital, Damascus today, claiming the lives of at least five members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard. Iran and Syria have blamed Israel for this attack, deeming it a provocative act. However, the Israeli military and government have not released any official statements regarding their involvement.

In addition, Israel has reported sending fighter jets to target Hezbollah outposts in the northern part of the country, further intensifying the regional tensions.

As the situation unfolds, these developments will be closely monitored. The international community, along with regional actors, remains committed to finding a peaceful resolution and bringing stability to the conflict-stricken area. It is essential that all stakeholders engage in constructive dialogue and work towards a sustainable and just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
