Preservation group seeks Reflecting Pool access amid evidence dispute

  • A preservation group is suing over renovations to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, seeking access to the site to assess damage before evidence is lost.
  • Officials admitted in court filings that the recently installed pool lining was "cut with a sharp knife or razor."
  • But the government has undertaken efforts to “destroy some of the very evidence that could shed light on the veracity of Defendants’ claims” by closing off and renovating the Washington, D.C., landmark, again to fix the damage, lawyers wrote Tuesday.
  • U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated the administration lacked evidence to prosecute a former Olympian for vandalism, attributing the damage to a "rushed and botched installation."
  • The Department of Interior determined the damage was caused by a “botched installation, not vandalism,” after an indictment had already been filed.
