BEACH bums had better make the most of the warmer weather with a cold front set to sweep across Newcastle from Thursday.
Temperatures could drop a full seven degrees from Wednesday to Thursday, bringing with it some showers and the possibility of thunderstorms as well.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jiwon Park said Novocastrians have experienced slightly warmer temperatures than the season average in recent weeks.
"The climate statistics say that for September, we should be around 20 degrees at Nobbys Head," he said.
"We are forecasting something like 24-25 degrees for today and tomorrow, and then 27 degrees on Wednesday, so it is still warmer than the average and dry as well because of the dominance of a high pressure system."
A significant drop in temperatures can be expected on Thursday, with a forecast of 20 degrees and a 60 per cent chance of rain.
Mr Park said those temperatures will bring the city closer to the seasonal average, or slightly below cooler than average.
"This cold front may bring some showers, potentially thunderstorms as well and also gusty southerly winds in the wake," he said.
"With that we may see some windy conditions developing along the coast from Thursday, and it also may bring some powerful southerly swells and surf conditions as well."
For the best and safest surf conditions, swimmers should hit the beach in the first half of the week to avoid large and powerful waves.
Wind chill factors will also be felt more significantly along the coastline than the Upper Hunter.
Mr Park said there may be marine wind or hazardous surf warnings later in the week, with the potential for a thunderstorm warning depending on moisture levels.
