Premier Sports Cup: Fraserburgh 1 Kilmarnock 3 as Ayrshire side get season off to winning start

Kilmarnock kicked off their season with a relatively comfortable routine win up north.

The Ayrshire side headed to Aberdeenshire to battle with Highland League side Fraserburgh this afternoon in a Premier Sports Cup group opener.

Derek McInnes made it clear his side wouldn't be treating the match as extended pre-season, and it proved so as they dispatched of the Broch with a fine 3-1 win.

Alan Power was handed his second Killie debut from the start, and Liam Polworth was added into the starting line-up after a loan spell with Dunfermline towards the end of last season.

Former Motherwell midfielder Liam Donnelly replaced Polworth in the second half to seal his debut.

Strikers Oli Shaw and Kyle Lafferty opened their respective accounts with goals either side of a Fraser Murray beauty.

It didn't take long for No 9 Shaw to get off the mark, his season account opened after just seven minutes as he headed home from an Alan Power cross.

And then in the 19th minute it was two for the visitors when Murray curled a fantastic free kick into the net from 25 yards which ensured Killie had early breathing room.

Murray almost turned provider five minutes later as he found Dan Armstrong at the far post, but the winger couldn't get enough on the effort to finish.

Rory McKenzie slipped in Northern Irish striker Lafferty in the 38th minute, but Broch goalkeeper Paul Leask saved well to deny the hitman.

Killie controlled the game into the break and beyond, as Derek McInnes' side asserted dominance.

McKenzie had an effort of his own in the 65th minute as he attempted to dink Leask, but the shot dipped wide.

The visitors had a glimmer of hope three minutes later as they pulled a goal back as Sean Butcher fired home to make it 2-1.

But an instant response from Killie restored the two-goal lead as Lafferty headed a close range effort in after an Armstrong cross met him well.
