Premier League to make VAR decision that will impact Manchester United and Man City fans

The Premier League reportedly plans to release in-game conversations between VAR officials this season.

The technology has been a controversial topic since its introduction in 2019, with many frustrated about the lack of clarity on decision-making from officials when in use. The Times report that exchanges with on-field and VAR officials could be made public in a first for the Premier League.

Referees do not conduct post-match interviews to explain their thoughts on incidents with worries that these would inevitably solely focus on negative or incorrect decisions. The choice to potentially air VAR conversations may help mitigate the annoyance felt by supporters.

It would mean Manchester United, Manchester City and other top-flight clubs' fans would be able to gain an insight into the methodical thinking of officials when making decisions. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says the idea has backing although no time frame has been set for its introduction.

He said: “There is a general view that [releasing the audio] is a good thing. There is a desire to be more open with fans about referees’ decision-making and how we do that precisely we need to work out.”
