Premier League table since Cristiano Ronaldo departure justifies Manchester United decision

Manchester United top the Premier League form table when taking into account matches played since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Sun have released a table which shows how Premier League clubs have fared since Ronaldo's final appearance in the league, November's 3-1 defeat away at Aston Villa. A week later, Ronaldo's bombshell interview with Piers Morgan was broadcast which put an end to his time at the club..

After that, the World Cup brought about a six-week break from Premier League action and since then United have been the most in form team in the league with seven wins, two draws and just a single defeat. Their ten matches have seen the amass 23 points, the same amount as the first 15 matches with Ronaldo in the squad.

In that time, they have played two more matches than current leaders Arsenal, with the Gunners five points behind as a result. Mikel Arteta's side sit third in this table, while surprise package Brentford are second, one point ahead of Arsenal.

Manchester City have played nine matches in the time period, but have only amassed 16 points. However, they are doing much better than Liverpool (11th, 13 pts), Tottenham (12th, 13 pts and Chelsea (14th, 10 pts.)

Ronaldo joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in January following the cancellation of his United contract. United manager Erik ten Hag said in December: “I have to make choices around players who are not performing and pick the best team. My accountability is in favour of the club and the team.

“They are the decisions I have to make. It doesn’t matter who is the person, it is about how we perform now.”
