Newcastle United and their Premier League rivals will see some changes to the VAR system for the coming season. The Magpies have their fair share of frustation with the decisions last season, with plenty of contentious calls.
Fans still rankle at the decision to disallow the goal in the Premier League match with Crystal Palace at St James' Park when Joe Willock was penalised for a foul, despite a clear push on the United midfielder in the build-up, while the margin of offiside given for what would have been Alexander Isak's second goal at Liverpool seemed harsh in the extreme.
United also had a penalty decision overturned against Arsenal in the final weeks of the season, although they have been occasions when they have been grateful for VAR intervention - Kieran Trippier's red card being reduced to a yellow against Manchester City a key example.
We can expect similar frustration and relief in equal measure again and the Premier League has now made a big call on the Video Assistant Referee for next season. There was the option to introduce automated offside.

It was a system that proved successful at the winter World Cup and there was speculation it could be introduced in the Premier League for the coming campaign.
However, according to The Times that will not be the case. One change that we will see, though, is that VARs will now have four extra cameras in stadiums to help with their decision-making.
The report adds that clubs have decided against using automated offside, which has also been used in the Champions League, but it could be brought in for the 2024/25 season.
