The Government has confirmed it will establish an independent regulator in football after backing plans made in the fan-led review. The review made 10 key recommendations to the government in order to improve the English game, ranging from fan safety to club ownership.
Former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch has worked with supporter groups to formulate a plan on how to improve the future of the sport, particularly focusing on the situation of ownerships amid the recent collapses of the likes of Bury and Macclesfield Town. Confirmation of the project comes just 12 months after the formation and demise of the European Super League, where six Premier League clubs looked to form a breakaway league alongside Juventus, Inter, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
The Government will now set out its full response this afternoon following a statement to the House of Commons by Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston. It will mean substantial change in the background to the operation of all clubs such as Leeds United.
