Premier League headlines as Watford's Roy Hodgson training clip goes viral ahead of Leeds clash

Here is a round up of today’s Premier League headlines on Wednesday, April 6.

Watford’s Roy Hodgson clip goes viral ahead of Leeds clash

Training videos are often a good way for Premier League clubs and players to show off impressive, surprising or humorous clips that supporters would not usually have access to. When Watford fans saw that their club had posted a video from their training session ahead of their Leeds United clash at the weekend, not one of them would have been close to guessing what it would include.

It showed their 74-year-old manager, Roy Hodgson, bending a perfect left-footed pass into the path of Hornets striker Joao Pedro leading to plenty of claims that he should include himself in the starting XI to face Jesse Marsch’s side! The video comfortably cleared one million views with plenty of football fans unaware that the former England manager had that kind of ability in his locker.

Hodgson will be hoping his players are able to take inspiration from the clip as they host Leeds at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Le Tissier steps down from Southampton ambassadorial role

As a footballer, Matt Le Tissier became a legend at Southampton where he made well in excess of 500 appearances, scoring 209 goals in all competitions. He then opted to go into punditry where he was a key part of the famous Sky Sports Soccer Saturday panel alongside other former players such as Phil Thompson, Paul Merson and Charlie Nicholas.

However, in the last couple of years, his reputation has suffered as a result of a number of controversial opinions he has shared on Twitter. Most recently, he deleted a tweet which questioned the validity of the media reporting of the war in Ukraine.

On the back of the backlash from that tweet, and a number of others, he announced earlier today that he has left his role as an ambassador for Southampton. His announcement on Twitter read: “To all the fans of SFC. I have decided to step aside from my role as an ambassador of SFC. My views are my own and always have been, and it’s important to take this step today to avoid any confusion.

“This does not affect my relationship with and love for my club, and I will always remain a fan and supporter of everything Saints. I can, however, see that due to recent events it’s important to separate the work I believe in from my relationship with the club I have supported and played for most of my life.”

Newcastle fan charged over racial gesture at Spurs game

During Sunday’s Premier League clash between Tottenham and Newcastle, a Magpies supporter was accused of making a racist gesture towards the home supporters. Northumbria Police confirmed that the man in question has been charged with racial/religious intentional harassment.

The statement went on to read: "Ever since we were made aware of this alleged incident, we have been working with Newcastle United and our partners as part of a full and thorough investigation."
