Leeds United must better Burnley’s result on the last day of the season to remain a Premier League football club. A poor night for Whites fans saw the Clarets snatch a point against Aston Villa and Everton complete a dramatic comeback victory against Crystal Palace.
However, the situation could have looked worse as Burnley were leading at Villa Park via an Ashley Barnes penalty. Emil Buendia’s strike after the break levelled the scoreline and Villa would have won if it were not for an inspired Nick Pope display between the sticks.
On Merseyside, Frank Lampard secured the Toffees’ top-flight status despite trailing 2-0 at half-time. Goals from Michael Keane, Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin clinched the points at Goodison Park - meaning the relegation battle is now a shoot-out between Leeds and Burnley.
Both sides on 35 points but Leeds’ vastly inferior goal difference means they will have to better Burnley’s result on Sunday. Jesse Marsch takes his troops to Brentford while the Clarets host a resurgent Newcastle - who harbour ambitions for a top-half finish.
The bookmaker’s odds are ominous, with bet365 making the Whites 2/5 to be playing Championship football next season. Burnley are favourites to stay up at 6/4.
