Predicted Chelsea XI vs Wolves as Potter decides Fofana replacement and Cucurella pushes to start

Graham Potter has made changes for each of his fixtures in charge of Chelsea so far, and there's no reason to expect otherwise against Wolves. Wesley Fofana's injury makes it inevitable that the Blues will make one alteration to his starting XI, but it remains difficult even to glean which formation the former Brighton coach will choose.

Fofana and N'Golo Kante are unavailable for selection as Chelsea welcome Wolves to Stamford Bridge this weekend, but Potter otherwise has a full selection of players to choose from. As such, there will be no shortage of big calls to make.

Ahead of the weekend's game, the new Blues boss suggested that there will likely continue to be changes of tactics throughout October and beyond as Chelsea look to manage their squad and the 47-year-old learns about his players.

Potter said: "You always consider the opponent, you consider the players that we have. We had an injury, we lost Marc [Cucurella] through illness from Salzburg to Crystal Palace. One or two other things happening. Sometimes that can change how you go and approach a game.

"I think it's important to have a couple of options because the personnel won't be the same for the next 10 or 11 games before the World Cup break. It's a really intense period where it's important to have some options. I think we have to manage the balance between change and consistency. If things happen to be inconsistent always, it can be destabilising."

With that said, it could be three central defenders once again for Chelsea, with Trevoh Chalobah providing the most suitable option to replace Fofana on Thiago Silva's right-hand side. With Ben Chilwell having started consecutive matches for the first time last season, Marc Cucurella's return may see the former Leicester defender drop back to the bench.

Jorginho will be pushing to return to the startling lineup, but Ruben Loftus-Cheek's efforts should be rewarded with an outing against Wolves, with Mateo Kovacic's substitution on Wednesday night meaning he should also be able to start at 3pm.

Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja and Kai Havertz will also be pushing to start, with Mason Mount perhaps the most likely to be left out, but Potter may look to continue to foster the relationships between Mount, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling.

Potter's decision in goal could be particularly informative moving forwards, with Edouard Mendy back to full fitness despite decent outings from Kepa Arrizabalaga in his absence.

Chelsea Predicted XI: Kepa; Chalobah, Silva, Koulibaly; James, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Cucurella; Sterling, Mount, Aubameyang.
