Praise for Frank Lampard but concern for Leeds United as national media react to Everton defeat

The national press think Leeds’ relegation fears are now becoming a reality after yesterday’s horror show on Merseyside.

Goals from Sheamus Coleman, Michael Keane and youngster Anthony Gordon helped Everton dismantle the Whites and confirmed Marcelo Bielsa’s side as candidates for the drop.

A tricky run in the next month could see Leeds plunged into more misery as they look to cure a serious case of second-season syndrome.

This is what outlets from across the country said about the defeat at Goodison…

Daily Mail: ‘Leeds should fear the drop’

The Mail Online’s Joe Bernstein believes Leeds supporters should be more concerned about relegation than Everton fans following the defeat.

He wrote: "On this showing, it's Leeds fans rather than Evertonians who should fear the big drop at the end of the season.

"Confounding the doom-mongers, Frank Lampard's men were irresistible at a rocking Goodison despite an injury list as lengthy as that of their visitors.

"In contrast, Leeds' brilliant midweek comeback at Aston Villa looks a distant memory. Already without big-hitters Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford, they could ill afford to see Stuart Dallas limping off after nine minutes.

Lampard galvanised Goodison - The Guardian

Frank Lampard’s appointment has been the key reason for Everton securing back-to-back home wins for the first time since September, The Guardian’s Andy Hunter reports.

"Frank Lampard has galvanised Goodison Park.

"For the second Saturday in succession the club’s new manager celebrated a resounding home win with a clenched-fist salute in front of a jubilant Gwladys Street end.

"For only the second time in five punishing months, Everton savoured the release of victory in the Premier League.

"Three games into his reign and Lampard has already witnessed the extremes of this Everton team.

"Leeds were not helped by the early loss of Stuart Dallas to injury but Bielsa’s decision to make two further substitutions at half-time reflected the paucity of his team’s contribution."

Donny van der Beek makes mockery of Man Utd

The Mirror’s Tom Victor hailed on-loan midfielder Donny van der Beek for the stellar performance he put in on his first Everton start.

He wrote: "On-loan Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek showed his parent club what they are missing in Everton's victory over Leeds United, while also demonstrating an ability to quickly adapt to a new system.

"Van de Beek's display was even enough to win over some Manchester United supporters, who were left frustrated after watching him impress on a day when their own midfield failed to deliver against Southampton."

Leeds ‘in as much trouble as Toffees’

Bielsa will be just as worried as Lampard was after Everton’s defeat to Newcastle, according to talkSPORT.

A match reporter for the radio station wrote: "As a sign of just how volatile this season’s Premier League relegation battle is, Leeds are now in as much trouble as Everton.

"A point ahead with a game more played, Bielsa will be just as worried as his old rival Lampard was after his Newcastle wake up call.

"And on an afternoon of positives for Lampard, whose team move five-points clear of the relegation zone, Manchester United loanee Donny van de Beek also impressed on his debut."
