PowerWash Simulator FF7 free DLC lets you clean up the whole of Midgar – literally

Spray away the dirt and grime plaguing Final Fantasy 7’s iconic cyberpunk city in PowerWash’s forthcoming free update.

PowerWash Simulator will soon let players jet wash their way through another prestigious Square Enix series: Final Fantasy. Midgar, specifically, is the location absolutely covered in grime this time around, set to arrive on all platforms on March 2, 2023 as part of a free expansion for everyone who already own the game.

Following its recent Tomb Raider crossover, in which players could clean up the entirety of Croft Manor, .

The Final Fantasy 7 themed DLC comes in the wake of the last expansion that took players to Croft Manor in a Tomb Raider crossover. It'll comprise of five levels in total, each offering either a mixture of dirt-ridden vehicles fans will recognise like Cloud Strife’s bike, the Hardy Daytona, or specific areas like Seventh Heaven – better known as Tifa Lockheart’s bar. The pack even includes (wait for it) the entirety of Midgar itself to clean. Or at least a version of it in the form of the shrunken-down Mako Energy Exhibit. The full list of levels is as follows:

  • The Hardy Daytona and Shinra Hauler
  • The Scorpion Sentinel
  • Seventh Heaven
  • The Mako Energy Exhibit
  • Airbuster

This return trip to a dirtier Midgar isn’t just about therapeutic cleaning, however, as the Square Enix blog post confirms the semblance of a story, much like in the main PowerWash Simulator campaign. “You’ll accept jobs from both loyal members of Avalanche, and Shinra bigshots,” it reads. “As you clean, you’ll discover their stories through text messages.”

As far as free DLC goes, the PowerWash Simulator FF7 DLC no doubt also doubles up as a sneaky bit of marketing on Square Enix's part. Its follow up to 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 remake, Rebirth, is set to launch on PS5 sometime later this holiday. Before then, though, players only need wait until March 2, 2023 to start power washing when this update arrives.

Wash on, wash off

The original PowerWash Simulator ended up being a surprisingly relaxing jaunt for me when it entered early access last year, becoming my podcast game of choice when the AAA releases slowed. It’s nice to see Square Enix continue to support such an oddball game like this with wacky and wonderful updates. To the extent that it’s got me thinking what other popular franchises I’d be willing to wash away the time with.

Forspoken, as the publisher’s latest high-profile release, seems like a good candidate. Although I’m not really sure how many players would get a kick out of power washing barren lands. I’d be more excited about the prospect of cleaning up Nier Automata’s androids and dystopian locales, if only because it would confirm that Square Enix knows that game still exists.
