The YSRCP government’s inefficiency is evident from the “increase in power tariff at regular intervals,” Telugu Desam Party (TDP) State president K. Atchannaidu has observed.
In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Atchannaidu said the latest increase in power tariff would impose a burden of ₹4,400 crore annually on the people. This was in addition to the ₹11,600 crore burden already imposed by the government by increasing the tariff earlier.
As per the policy adopted during the TDP term, a power consumer remained under a particular category for the whole year depending on the average consumption during the previous year, he said. Even if the consumer used more power in a particular month, there was no change in the category, he added.
“But now, there is be a huge difference. The poor and the middle class sections will be burdened because of the monthly consumption-based categorisation,” Mr. Atchannaidu said, and alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had increased the power tariff for the poor by 45%.
“This is unacceptable, and the TDP will resort to a State-wide agitation,” he said, and added that the protests would continue until the government rolled back the tariff hike.
“If the Chief Minister is unable to keep his promises, he should step down,” he demanded.
