Power shocker: Auto driver gets electricity bill of Rs 7 lakh in Telangana

HYDERABAD: An auto driver in Bhadradri Kothagudem district got the shock of his life as he received an electricity bill of ₹7 lakh.

With three tube lights, a cooler, a refrigerator and two fans, the average monthly electricity bill of Sampath Madisetti of Chatakonda hamali colony in Laxmidevipally village was ₹500.

Sampath Madisetti noticed that the electricity consumption was only 117 units but the bill generated was ₹7,02,825. “Initially I mistook it for ₹70,000 and was surprised. But when a friend pointed out that it was more than ₹7 lakh, I rushed to the local electricity office hoping to get some help.

I was told that the officer had gone out and the staff did not know when he would come. I did not get a proper response from the staff,” he told TOI.

Sampath Madisetti getting an electricity bill for a huge amount became public knowledge and eventually, officials corrected the bill. He has now been given a bill for ₹675.

“I will pay this amount but what I am surprised at is when Iinitially approached the staff regarding the bill, they were indifferent to my complaint. Now I am told that there was an error in the machine that calculated the amount,” Sampath Madisetti said.
