Power of Film: stars including Edgar Wright and Matthew Modine gather to discuss the power of cinema

Acclaimed filmmakers from Edgar Wright and Asif Kapadia to Sandy Powell and Matthew Modine convene this week to discuss cinema and its impact on the world.

The two-day event, called A Rabbit’s Foot – Power of Film, is organised by Charles Finch, film producer and host of Bafta and Oscar parties. It takes place at the Royal Institution in Mayfair today and tomorrow.

The organisers say the programme of masterclasses and talks, in association with Giorgio Armani, will be “a series of thought-provoking discussions about cinema and its power to influence and define the modern world”.

Other guests include Ken Loach, who directed Kes and I, Daniel Blake; Josie Rourke, the director of Mary Queen of Scots and Sir Christopher Hampton, who adapted Dangerous Liaisons and The Father for the screen.

After the first day of talks there will be a special screening of classic James Dean film Rebel Without a Cause, which has been remastered.

As well as being a film producer, Finch is the editor-in-chief of film, art and culture publication A Rabbit’s Foot. He said that the event “is an opportunity for us to collect some of the most important voices in film together” and give the audiences “a real insight into the artisanal approach to filmmaking”.
