One of the big free agent fish many Lions fans hoped the team would land has been hooked by another team. Safety Marcus Williams has agreed to sign with the Baltimore Ravens.
Williams was widely speculated as a target for the Lions for his connections to Detroit coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. He was also the top player on the market at safety, a position where the Lions desperately need an upgrade. But the 26-year-old received an offer he apparently couldn’t refuse from the Ravens, who also had a massive hole in the middle of their secondary.
Reports indicate Williams will sign in Baltimore for $70 million over five years, though the exact details are not yet known and won’t be official until Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.
The Lions have re-signed Tracy Walker and C.J. Moore at safety, but neither is close to the caliber of Williams’ impact. Remaining free agents at safety include Tyrann Mathieu, Marcus Maye, Jordan Whitehead and DeShon Elliott.
