Potential Katie Taylor opponent Cris Cyborg wins in pro boxing debut

MMA legend and potential future Katie Taylor opponent Cris Cyborg has won in her professional boxing debut.

The Brazilian defeated countrywoman Simone da Silva by unanimous decision after eight rounds of action.

Current Bellator World Featherweight Champion Cyborg, controlled the action from start to finish and thoroughly deserved to pick up the decision win.

One of the most decorated female fighters in history, the 37-year-old from Curitiba in Brazil has long been touted as a potential future opponent for Ireland's Katie Taylor.

Cyborg herself has spoken on numerous occasions of her desire to go one on one with 'The Bray Bomber,' and prior to making her boxing debut, she revealed that she would be honoured to step into the ring with the Irish boxer.

The former UFC champion may have to wait in line for a shot at the 2012 Olympic gold medalist however, as Taylor is already scheduled to fight Argentina’s Karen Elizabeth Carabajal on October 29th.

This will of course be Taylor's first fight since she defeated Amanda Serrano in an all-time classic at Madison Square Garden back in April. Serrano herself returned to the ring in winning fashion on Saturday night, and promptly proceeded to call for a rematch with Taylor.

Even worse for Cyborg, the legitimacy of her debut win is in question. A myriad of sanctioning issues plagued the build up to the fight, with Cyborg's opponent being in the middle of a 60 day mandatory medical suspension imposed upon her as a result of her being knocked out in a fight in Texas just over a month ago.

Eventually, the fight got sanctioned. However, it is unknown whether the fight will count as a professional bout, or whether in time it will be deemed to be an exhibition contest.
