Postecoglou in stern 'results always matter' response after Spurs friendly loss

Ange Postecoglou has insisted "results always matter" after Tottenham fell to a 3-2 defeat to West Ham in pre-season.

The former Celtic boss took charge of his new side for the first time in the pre-season fixture in Australia.

But, Postecoglou was on the losing side Down Under as goals from Giovani Lo Celso and Destiny Udogie were only consolations due to Danny Ings, Divan Mubama and Gianluca Scamacca netting for David Moyes' side.

Postecoglou, however, was pleased with some aspects of his side's performance as he hailed his squad for implementing his style of play despite the defeat.

However, speaking to Spurs media, Postecoglou knocked back the suggestion results don't matter in pre-season.

He said: "Results always matter, mate.

"From our perspective, we want to be a team that plays good football and dominates games; but we obviously want to win.

"That's not the most important thing for me right now, winning tonight but not playing the kind of football we want, I'd have been disappointed with that.

"We've got work to do, we knew that, no surprise there but really encouraged by the way the boys have been working hard at training; and secondly their endeavours to implement it in the game."

Further discussing the positives despite the full-time result, Postecoglou added: "There were a lot of positives. The first thing for me is to see the players' willingness to try and implement some of the things we have been working on.

"We have been working hard in training so they are not going to feel 100 percent.

"But their endeavours to try and play the football we want to play; particularly our pressing and these kind of things.

"We have only given them limited information but it is good to see some of those things in practice."
