Positive Chester FC verdict given on ex-Bolton Wanderers defender Liam Edwards after transfer

Chester FC boss Calum McIntyre believes former Bolton Wanderers defender Liam Edwards has a 'really exciting future' after making the switch to the non-league side.

The 25-year-old was one of eight players released by Wanderers this summer as Ian Evatt augments his squad ahead of the 2022/23 season. Edwards played eight times for Bolton's first team during his time at the club.

The defender experienced a nightmare spell with injuries which began at the end of February 2020 with a knee problem. He made his return for the club's first team in the Papa John's Trophy at the start of November last season, coming off the bench in the closing stages of the win over Rochdale.

Edwards subsequently headed out on loan for what turned out to be the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign as he headed to Southport. He ended up playing nine times for the Sandgrounders.

Becoming a free agent this summer after his release by Wanderers, Edwards has signed for the Blues and will link up officially with his new club for pre-season ahead of a deal starting at the beginning of August. Chester boss McIntyre is excited at the prospect he has at his disposal with Edwards a part of his squad.

Speaking to our colleagues at CheshireLive, McIntyre said of Edwards joining the National League North side: “We wanted someone very strong in the air that is the right type of character. In Liam, I feel we have that.

“He has played games in this league and at higher level. He has a really exciting background and hopefully a really exciting future with us as we move into the next season.

“He is a very good player. It is too easy sometimes just to categorise players. He has ability in a number of positions, he can play in midfield as well if required and is very strong defensively.”
