Portsmouth boss makes 'best I’ve ever worked with' claim about Man City loanee Gavin Bazunu

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley has lauded Gavin Bazunu as the on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper once again stood out for the League One side.

Bazunu has been earning rave reviews since joining Portsmouth on a season-long loan last summer. The Republic of Ireland international sits top of the pile for clean sheets in the third tier, having kept 15 in 35 appearances so far this season.

And the 20-year-old was in fine form once again on Saturday as he earned Pompey a point in their home game against Wycombe Wanderers. The City keeper was kept busy as he helped his side to a goalless draw at Fratton Park.

Bazunu made three important saves in order to deny Anis Mehmeti, Sam Vokes and Lewis Wing. His efforts ensured Portsmouth didn’t fall to a second successive defeat to keep their slim hopes of reaching the play-offs alive.

And Bazunu’s display caught the eye of his boss on the south coast. Cowley couldn’t hide his admiration for the young goalkeeper, who has been one of his standout performers this season.

“He hasn’t [had to make many saves all season]. You look at the stats, he hasn’t, but he did today and he made some good ones,” Cowley told HampshireLive.

“He’s a top goalkeeper. He’s the best I’ve ever worked with.”

Bazunu will be aiming to carry over his club form as he heads away on international duty with Ireland next week. The City goalkeeper has been called up to Stephen Kenny’s squad for the friendlies in Dublin against Belgium on Saturday, March 26, and Lithuania on Tuesday, March 29.
