Portsmouth and Oxford lead chase for St Mirren academy star Ethan Erhahon as Stephen Robinson targets perfect midfield blend

St Mirren face a battle to hold on to midfield talent Ethan Erhahon after Portsmouth and Oxford emerged as potential suitors.

The 20-year-old Saints academy graduate has enjoyed another solid season in the stripes, making 26 appearances in all competitions and notching the winner against Livingston in October.

Having enjoyed a loan spell with Barnsley previously, now the Daily Express report the English League One sides are keen to take Erhahon south as they build for next season.

Stephen Robinson has stated previously that he hopes to involve St Mirren's most talented youngsters like Erhahon and Jay Henderson more than they have been previously next season.

Serie A side Sassuolo are also believed to have scouted the in-demand midfielder, who still has a year left to run on his current contract.

Meanwhile Robinson hopes he’s finally cracked the right formula to turn St Mirren back into a winning machine.

The Buddies picked up their first Premiership win in five attempts on Saturday with a crucial 1-0 away victory against St Johnstone.

Robinson has struggled to find the perfect blend after replacing Jim Goodwin back in February, particularly in the middle of the park.

But he feels the Buddies impressive performance in Perth suggests they’ve discovered a combination of midfield players that should help drive the team forward.

Robinson said: “You have to make big calls in the team and I thought we got the right balance.

“Alex Gogic and Connor Ronan sitting in there with Greg Kiltie in front of them were very good.

“They were creative, but Gogic broke everything up.

“The goal comes from him breaking it up and sliding a ball through.

“The players started with the bit between their teeth. We deserved it, holding out against a St Johnstone team fighting for their lives. We created the better chances.”
