The library at Portland State University was recently taken over by protestors, rendering it unusable, according to a statement by university President Ann Cudd on Friday. Cudd mentioned that the library cannot be occupied at the moment but the university aims to reopen it in time for the fall term. The library team is actively working on providing remote services and identifying alternative spaces for students to utilize.
President Cudd acknowledged the significant stress experienced by the campus community due to recent events. She expressed understanding of the disruptions caused by the campus closures and the ongoing protests. Cudd also recognized the emotions surrounding the protests, violence in Gaza, and the unsettling scenes witnessed on campus.
While supporting the right to protest, Cudd emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all members of the community. She stated that PSU will enforce laws and policies regarding trespassing and property damage to ensure the well-being of students and staff.
In response to the situation, President Cudd made the decision to postpone her Presidential Investiture Ceremony, which was scheduled to inaugurate her as president. The ceremony will be rescheduled for a later date to allow for a more appropriate and conducive environment.
