Portland State endured a brutal defeat during its season opener against Oregon, losing in blowout fashion, 81–7.
During a Tuesday appearance on “The Bald Faced Truth with John Canzano,” Vikings head coach Bruce Barnum indicated that most of his team had avoided significant injury during the beatdown in Eugene, except for one player who Barnum said had “his ear ripped off.”
“We’re fine. Knock on wood. We had one guy get his ear ripped off. They sewed it back on, and now they say he has a concussion,” Barnum said. “So, he’s out, but I think he’s fine.
“Not the whole ear. Partial ear detachment,” Barnum clarified. “I think it was from when he got his helmet knocked off, and I think his ear didn’t come out of his helmet.”
Barnum did not identify which player sustained the gruesome ear injury, but did state that the individual would not be playing in Week 2.
Portland State plays against Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 9 in its second game of the season. It will be the program’s final matchup against FBS opponents this year.
The Week 1 loss was the sixth time Portland State and Oregon have ever played, with all six results going in favor of the Ducks.
