A light aircraft has crashed into the sea near a beach in Bridgend.
Eyewitnesses said the plane’s engine began “spluttering” before it “crash landed” along the shore near Porthcawl pavilion about 9.20am on Tuesday.
Terry Sinnett, who witnessed the incident, tweeted: “Looks like a small aircraft has come down in Porthcawl. Pilot being attended by public but was walking. Hoping everyone is safe.”
He added: “Think I saw pilot being helped away from sea by the emergency services.
“Seems pilot has had a miraculous escape, thankfully.”
Margaret Kendrick, who lives locally, said she looked out of her window to see the aircraft upside-down in the water.
“He was very lucky where it landed, I walked out of my house and saw a red shape,” she said.
“Somebody not far away saw it coming down, all of a sudden the plane was quiet and the engine went off,” she added.
RNLI lifeboats from Porthcawl and Port Talbot were sent to rescue the pilot, who was taken into the care of the Welsh Ambulance service.
“The coastguard search and rescue helicopter from St Athan was also alerted, as well as South Wales Police and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service,” a coastguard spokesperson added.
