Portadown FC fans react to Paul Doolin appointment

Portadown fans have widely welcomed the appointment of former title winner Paul Doolin as interim manager until the end of the season.

Doolin has stepped in following the departure of Matthew Tipton at the weekend.

Tipton parted company with the club after Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Dungannon Swifts which leaves the club in 11th place in the Irish Premiership.

Dubliner Doolin had two spells as a player at Portadown from 1990-91 and 1994-95 and became the first player to win a league and cup double on both sides of the border.

The 59-year-old has also had spells at clubs including Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City, Shelbourne, Dundalk and UCD.

Doolin served as player-coach with UCD before joining Drogheda in 2003 where he guided the club to a first-ever league title and back-to-back Setanta Cup wins.

He also managed at Cork City and then took charge of the Republic of Ireland under-19 side leading the young international side to the semi-finals of the European Championships in 2011.

His last managerial position was at League of Ireland First Division club Athlone Town.

Portadown Chairman David Jameson told the club's website: "We are delighted that Paul has agreed to join PFC as our new interim manager. We look forward to the wealth of experience Paul can bring to Portadown to ensure we stay in the Premiership."

Portadown Director of Football Peter Hunniford added: As a board of directors Paul Doolin is someone who we have rated highly for quite some time.

"He has played at the highest level in both the Irish league and the League of Ireland before moving into management where he was been highly successful at both club and international level.

"We are looking forward to working with him."

Fans have been reacting to the appointment on social media, and most are happy with Doolin coming in.

Ports 57 said on Twitter: "Excellent appointment.I went to Drogheda games when Paul was manager.Won the league and Setanta Cup. Met him when there and very knowledgeable. Hopefully settle the ship but can't complain with the pedigree of Paul.Impressive CV."

Colin said supporters "gotta be happy with that appointment" while Roy hailed Doolin as a "class act as a player".

Most supporters wished Doolin well in his new role, while Colin B tweeted: "Happy days."

Aaron added: "Good luck Paul, hopefully you've time to get a few new faces in and get the team together and playing well."

Ruth said: "Welcome back Paul!"

Portadown are in action on Tuesday night against Crusaders in the Irish Premiership.

It is understood Doolin will be in attendance but coach Trevor Williamson will look after first-team affairs.
