A POPULAR Aberdeen events venue is set to close permanently after its final events in October.
Harbourworks, which opened earlier this year in a former warehouse on York Street, said the cost and complexity of operating the temporary events space had become unsustainable.
The venue hosted fanzones for Scotland’s World Cup matches over the summer, alongside street food, music and other large-scale events. Oktoberfest dates are still planned for September, before two final dance music events on October 2 and 3.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Harbourworks said: “Following our final dance music events on October 2 and 3, Harbourworks will close its doors permanently.
“Harbourworks was always intended to be a temporary project. We created it to fill a gap that we felt had been missing from Aberdeen for some time – a large, flexible space where we could bring people together for music, food, sport and events on a scale this is completely missing in the city.”
Its owners said the requirement to secure temporary licences for each event meant the project could not continue in the long term.
They added that obtaining a permanent licence and carrying out the required work on the building would require investment that could not be justified in the current economic climate.
The statement continued: “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported Harbourworks over the past year.
“Whether you danced with us, came down for street food and a drink, or celebrated – and cried – with us watching the football, thank you for being a part of it.”
The venue said it hoped to return with future projects elsewhere, adding: “This isn’t the end, just the closing of this particular chapter. We’ll see you under another roof soon.”
