Popular Dumfries pub put up for sale for £195,000

Popular pub Coach and Horses is up for sale with a £195,000 price tag.

Co-owners Heather and John Owens have placed their own sign in the window of the waterfront hostelry and the sale includes the upstairs function room which was previously a restaurant.

Mrs Owens said: “To be honest, the pub has been up for sale for almost 10 years, but I thought I should do something myself and put the sign in the window.

“We took it over in 2008 so it’s been nearly 14 years, but I am getting old.

“I am 66 this year and we would just like to retire although I would be happy to do something.”

The Coach and Horses has been struck with bad luck in recent years stemming back to a fire in the upstairs restaurant which was called Home.

Mrs Owens said: “The fire was in November 2019 and that was the start of things.

“The water used to put the fire out caused the ceiling to collapse in the pub.

“Then, like everyone, we suffered under the Covid-19 pandemic and various closures and new measures like social distancing to table service.

“We got the place open and then just days later came the floods (last October) and there was more damage.

“So we have done the place up and made the upstairs a function room but at this time I still don’t know how long we will stay open with the pandemic.

“So we didn’t want to take on more staff then pay them off because of Covid-19 if we had to close.”

Mrs Owens told of another piece of misfortune during her tenure at the pub.

She said: “After the fire and the re-opening on the way, the regulars and musicians that we had in the pub had a night for us at the Venue.

“But after I came out the place I stumbled on the cobbles and fell onto the ground and broke my wrist. So it’s fair to say we had a real run of bad luck.

“The pub was a coach house back in the day and although I have not completed all my research, the place is about 400 years old, something like that.

“I did find out that upstairs was allegedly a brothel back in the days of Robert Burns and no doubt he would have been a visitor upstairs as he lived not far away.

“It was a place for coaches and visitors to come to when there were markets down the water front and I am sure there were stables around the back.

“But we don’t have that ground.

“However, there is certainly a lot of history to the place.”

Glasgow agents Christie and Co. are responsible for selling the business.

And Alistair Watt, business agent for hospitality Scotland, said: “It’s on at market price and we believe it will sell.

“In terms of interest, it’s been busy enough. It has been fully refurbished and back to its former glory and in walk-in condition.”

The Coach and Horses is open four days a week from Thursday to Sunday.
