Pope Leo XIV has made a key US appointment, naming Bishop Ronald Hicks as the new archbishop of New York. The fellow Chicagoan will lead one of the nation's largest archdioceses, which faces the challenge of navigating relations with the Trump administration and its immigration crackdown.
Bishop Hicks, currently the bishop of Joliet, Illinois, replaces Cardinal Timothy Dolan, a prominent conservative figure in the US Catholic hierarchy. Cardinal Dolan recently finalised a plan to establish a $300 million fund to compensate victims of sexual abuse who had sued the archdiocese.
