When Pope Leo XIV made his first appearance on the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica after his May 8 election, he made a statement.
The 69-year-old wore a red satin mozzetta shoulder cape and a burgundy stola, complete with gold embroidery and a gold cross suspended from a double-stranded silken gold cord, a departure from his predecessor Pope Francis's simpler style of a white cassock and silver cross.
