Pop star thought he was going to die when plane suffered decompression

A popstar left messages on the phones of his children when he believed his flight was about to crash into the water. Chesney Hawkes, who had a hit in the 1990s with ‘The One and Only’ said he saw a stewardess in a ‘foetal position’ on the floor trying to get a mask on in the emergency.

The flight this week from Greece to Barcelona on Monday hit trouble and Chesney, 51, said that the pilot came over the intercom saying: “Emergency descent — brace,” And the singer, who was on the flight with wife Krissy, said the left messages to their three children, so certain they were of being in great danger.

He told the Sun the plane plunged 20,000 feet before making an emergency landing and that the angle of bank over the sea made him think they were about to crash into the water. He said: “We thought we were going down. Our ears hurt and babies were crying. The pilot came over the loudspeaker and said, ‘emergency descent — brace’.”

Chesney said the plane was “rattling and banked so steeply” and he believed the aircraft was heading into the water. He said: “We left a voice message on the family WhatsApp group. We were both crying told the kids how proud we were of them and how much we loved them.

“There was no other information. The stewards were crying and everyone around us was hysterical. Then suddenly the plane stopped rattling and the descent slowed.”

Chesney and Krissy managed to delete the WhatsApp message before their kids listened to it once they landed back on the ground. The publication reports that flight A3560 took off from Thessaloniki with 156 passengers and six crew on board at 12.30pm on Monday.

The flight was diverted to Naples, Italy and landed safely. Chesney even tweeted a snap with the pilot after the ordeal, calling him a hero.

Aegean Airlines made an announcement via state broadcaster ERT: “Aegean informs that on flight A3 560 from Thessaloniki to Barcelona with 156 passengers and 6 crew members there was an indication of gradual decompression in the aircraft cabin. The captain, as required by procedure, requested permission to make an emergency landing at the nearest airport in Naples.”
