Pop singer Shakira has revealed that her elderly father is receiving hospital treatment after suffering a ‘bad fall’ – all amid reports her relationship with football ace Gerard Piqué has come to a crashing end.
The distraught 45-year-old Colombian singing sensation took to social media on Saturday to set the record straight after photos emerged seemingly showing her being rushed to hospital.
However, she explained that she had been in the back of an ambulance alongside her 90-year-old father William Mebarak Chadid who had suffered a fall.
Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Shakira shared a snap of herself affectionately kissing the bruised face of her elderly father and shared a statement about photographs that have emerged in Spain.
She wrote: “Guys, I’m getting a lot of messages of concern that I was seen in an ambulance in Barcelona recently.
“I just wanted to let you know that those photos are from last weekend (the 28th), when my dad unfortunately had a bad fall and I accompanied him in an ambulance to the hospital where he is recovering now
“Please do send all your best wishes his way and thank you all as always for all of your love and support.”
Fans dutifully did then respond with expressions of concern and well wishes to Shakira’s father – while many others declared there were “here for you”.
One Twitter follower replied: “I’m so sorry hope he is all good , and I hope you are ok as well.”
Shakira’s update about her father’s health came just hours after news emerged her relationship with 35-year-old Gerard had come to an abrupt end.
The pair had been an item since 2011 and together they welcomed two sons together; nine-year-old Milan and seven-year-old Sasha.
A brief statement, released by the singer’s communication agency, confirmed on Saturday: “We regret to confirm that we are parting ways.
“For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
While local Spanish reports have suggested that the pair split some weeks ago and had been living separately.
The Spanish outlet El Periodico claimed Gerard had been staying in a bachelor pad and has been living a "party lifestyle" since the split.
The couple met back in 2010 when Shakira made a music video for her World Cup soundtracking smash hit Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).
The paid have never married but welcomed their two sons together and lived in Barcelona – as Spanish footballer Gerard played for the city’s football club.
