Poll: Majority concerned about Biden and Trump's age for second term

Final 2020 U.S. presidential campaign debate in Nashville

The Dominant Issue in the Presidential Race: Concerns Over Age of President Biden and Former President Trump for Second Term

Age is emerging as a dominant issue in the ongoing presidential race as 86% of Americans surveyed believe that President Biden is too old for a second term, while 59% said the same about former President Trump. While President Biden tried to make light of the situation, the response has been far from humorous, especially within his own party.

The White House has been grappling with shifting messaging on this issue. Initially, President Biden lashed out at the special counsel's report, but today he made jokes about his age. White House officials have labeled the report as a political hit job, and the press secretary attempted to reframe the president's age as an asset. However, the effectiveness of these efforts remains uncertain.

The president publicly downplayed concerns about his age, but behind closed doors, his advisors and allies are increasingly furious. The recently released special counsel's report has only exacerbated one of Biden's significant political liabilities. A recent ABC poll revealed that 86% of voters think he is too old to serve another term, including 73% of Democrats.

First Lady Jill Biden weighed in on the matter, criticizing the special counsel for what she considered inappropriate political attacks on her husband. She expressed disbelief that someone would exploit their son's death for political gain.

President Biden, now 81, faces pressure to demonstrate his capabilities. The decision to skip the traditional Super Bowl interview for two consecutive years raised eyebrows. Instead, he chose to appear on TikTok, which contradicts his campaign's stance from last year when they claimed they would not join the platform. This move has put the president's campaign at odds with his own FBI director, who has raised national security concerns about the app and banned its usage on government devices.

The decision to use TikTok despite national security concerns has raised questions and some confusion. The White House has struggled to explain this move, with a spokesperson apologizing for not being able to provide clarity on the campaign's decision.

In the wake of the special counsel's report, Vice President Kamala Harris was confronted with questions about whether concerns over the president's age increased pressure on her to convince voters that she is capable of assuming the helm. Her response was direct, asserting her readiness to serve without hesitation.

As the presidential race progresses, the issue of age continues to be a dominant concern. The survey results highlighting doubts about both President Biden and former President Trump's ability to serve another term underscore the importance of this issue in the minds of the American public.
