POLL: How far do Vikings need to go for Kirk Cousins to be long-term option?

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is one of the most polarizing players in the NFL.

On one side of the aisle, people are pushing to keep him on the roster because he’s clearly an above average quarterback that could stuff a stat sheet with his eyes closed. He also gives the team the best chance to win right now.

And then there’s the other side that’s tired of the Vikings footing the bill for lucrative contracts and receiving mediocre results in return. This is a team that hasn’t played in a postseason game in three years with Cousins under center.

There’s an argument to be made that the defensive unit has consistently let the team down in recent years, and Cousins is being unfairly blamed for all of the shortcomings. However, some would also make the case that the 33-year-old quarterback can’t be trusted in big games.

The feelings of the Vikings organization clearly lies somewhere in the middle with the team signing him to a one-year extension in the offseason. Granted, he still managed to finesse them for $35 million in guaranteed money and a no-trade clause in his contract.

But first year general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell are convinced they can change the narrative surrounding their franchise quarterback.

The Vikings clearly want a long-term option and stability at the quarterback position, but they haven’t felt comfortable going to whatever number Cousins sees for himself in another multi-year deal.

How far do the Vikings need to go in 2022 for the three-time Pro Bowler to prove he’s worthy of a long-term extension?

You can cast your vote in the poll above. Does Cousins and the Vikings need to simply make the playoffs to warrant a big extension, or do they need to win a conference championship or even a Super Bowl?
