Political figures react to Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation as prime minister

  • Various political leaders and figures have reacted to Sir Keir Starmer ’s resignation as prime minister and leader of Labour party on Monday morning.
  • Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ed Davey said Sir Keir’s replacement would have to change “our broken politics”.
  • Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for a general election following Sir Keir’s announcement and commented: “Reform demands an election, and we are ready to deliver radical change”.
  • Green Party leader Zack Polanski said “Starmer lost the confidence of the country because of his abject failure to challenge the power and wealth of an establishment” and added Andy Burnham “must be bold or he will be bust” if he replaces Sir Keir in Downing Street.
  • Sir Sadiq Khan paid tribute to Sir Keir as “a man of great integrity” as he urged the prime minister’s successor to “invest in every part of the country” – including London.
