Polish PM Urges European Nations To Increase Defense Investment

U.S. Senate panel on defense budget in Washington

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called on European nations to boost their defense spending, warning that the continent is ill-prepared for the current geopolitical climate. In a recent interview with European newspapers, Tusk emphasized the need for heightened vigilance in the face of escalating tensions.

Tusk's remarks come in the wake of Russia's ongoing military aggression in Ukraine, which he described as a stark reminder of the reality of modern warfare. He highlighted Russia's intensified airstrikes on Ukraine, including a recent incident where Russian missiles breached Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine, prompting Warsaw to elevate its military readiness.

Recent reports indicate that Moscow has stepped up its attacks, targeting key infrastructure in Ukraine in response to Ukrainian aerial assaults on the Russian border region of Belgorod. Italian fighter jets stationed at a Polish military base intercepted two Russian spy aircraft in the Baltic Sea, underscoring the heightened tensions in the region.

Tusk stressed the urgent need for support for Ukraine and called for enhanced cooperation among Poland, Germany, and France to address the escalating crisis. He warned that the current situation represents the most critical moment since the end of World War II, urging a collective shift in mindset to adapt to the new geopolitical realities.

Furthermore, Tusk criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for baseless attempts to link a recent terrorist attack in Moscow to Ukraine, accusing him of using such incidents to justify violent attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine.
