Police charge 19yo Queensland man over fiery Sydney Harbour Bridge crash

Here's the moment a speeding car crashed into a van on Sydney Harbour Bridge

Detectives have charged a man who allegedly stole a car before causing a fiery crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a day after calling on the public to help identify him.

Police had been unable to identify the 19-year-old man from Queensland, who they allege was driving a Toyota Kluger SUV which swerved into oncoming traffic and slammed into a van on Monday morning.

The man, Christopher Walker, remains in hospital and was today set to appear before Central Local Court via a bedside hearing.

He has been charged with several offences including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

Police allege Mr Walker assaulted a man in the CBD and stole the keys to his Kluger just before 7am on Monday.

A short time later, emergency services were called to the three-car crash on the Harbour Bridge.

The Kluger flipped onto its roof before bursting into flames, sparking a massive emergency response and causing widespread chaos during morning peak hour.

Yesterday afternoon, investigators released an image of the man's heavily tattooed hand in the hope that someone would be able to identify him.

The tattoo is of a large eye on the top of the man's hand, with wavy lines that extended across his fingers and wrist.

Mr Walker is being treated for suspected head injuries and remains under police guard.

The van driver sustained serious pelvic and leg injuries and was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst.

A 53-year-old woman in a blue Honda Civic sustained minor injuries and was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown.

Over the past few days, police have spoken to several witnesses who were on the bridge at the time or saw the lead up to the collision.
